Abbe Findley

Meet Abbe, the mastermind behind all things Zizia Botanicals...and I mean all things! Abbe grew up on a farm outside of KC and now resides in LA as a clinical herbalist. This persuit has her formulating, manufacturing and designing (her labels and graphics are my favorite). Zizia was born after studying and practicing herbalism for almost a decade, and I was so thrilled to bring her creations back to Kansas City. Her tinctures are magic, and I literally cannot miss a day without her mushroom mesquite blend. Please enjoy getting to know more about Abbe!

The current state of the world has us feeling all the feels. How have you been handling this?

It’s up and down depending on the day, there’s a lot of layers to this situation we’re in. I try to stay present as much as I can, taking breaks from the media and keeping in touch with friends and family helps.

What are you most looking forward to when this calms down?

Hanging out with friends, mask free, no distancing required.

Anything you’ve been doing to ramp up your immunity?

I’ve been cooking with lots of ginger, garlic, and fresh fruits and veggies. Also drinking lots of chilled herbal teas (Nettles, Lemon Balm, Green Tea). I’ve been taking a few formulas I make for building immunity, including the Immune Tincture, Lungs Tincture, and Reishi Astragalus Powder. A few key herbs you’ll find in these are medicinal mushrooms, astragalus, echinacea, elderberry, and ginger.

What are some ways you de-stress?

Baths, exercise, taking breaks from whatever it is I’m doing that’s stressing me out, and the Relax Tincture on ice with sparkling water.

I am completely smitten with all things Zizia. When did you first fall in love with herbs? What was the journey leading up to Zizia?

I got into herbal medicine about ten years ago when I was in school studying art at KCAI. I’d go into Phoenix Herb Company all the time with friends. I was totally mesmerized by the whole herb shop, but felt really overwhelmed of where to start. Years later I moved back home to the small rural farming town I grew up in, and had my own little farm with chickens, goats, ducks, and a big veggie garden (full of produce and a good amount of weeds). There I really started to dive deeper into herbal medicine through gardening and cooking. I wanted to learn more about it and study under someone who actually knew what they were doing, someone who knew how to use herbs in a pragmatic and practical way for their everyday applications. That led me to herb school, and I’ve been obsessed with plants ever since. I started Zizia about three years ago, pulling all this experience into creating a line of products and formulas I’ve seen help my friends, family, clients, and community over the years.

What is your current skin routine?

AM Skin time, it’s simple:

A quick rinse with cool water, sometimes I even skip that and jump right into Zizia’s Cleansing Toner applied with a cotton round, a spritz of the 5 Flowers Face Mist, Face Serum, and Josh Rosebrook’s Tinted SPF 30 day cream. I stopped wearing daily makeup (foundation, concealer, eye makeup) when I was 20, it’s really helped my skin and complexion, and I’m a less is more kinda gal anyway. When I do wear makeup it’s simple, Illia mascara and lips, currently loving Balmyard Beauty’s Candy Girl tint. Last spritz before heading out the door is Sigil Scent’s Anima Mundi.

PM Skin time, I go deep:

  1. Tata Harper’s Regenerating Cleanser
  2. Zizia’s Cleansing Toner
  3. Zizia’s 5 Flowers Face Mist
  4. Zizia’s Face Serum (a few nights a week I mix a dropper of Heart of Gold’s Resonant Frequency Flow Serum in)
  5. F. Miller Eye Oil
  6. Heart of Gold’s Bonbon Lip Treatment

Once a week I like to do a mask, lately I bounce between Wildcare’s Soft Focus Mask & Tata Harper’s Resurfacing Mask

Some quick-fire questions...if you could eat anything for breakfast what would it be?

Lately, I’ve been cooking pancakes with sausage and fresh fruit
