WOW Holiday Guide Issue 4

I've had several conversations with people who are approaching the holidays differently this year, and a common desire was to only shop locally for holiday gifts. As a small business owner, this makes me warm and fuzzy. As a consumer, this motivated and inspired me to practice what I preach by extending Women owned Wednesdays to promote local small businesses owned by women! Every Wednesday will have multiple, women-owned businesses that you can learn about and support, and in the holiday spirit of giving we’ll have some epic giveaways for you!

Heather Morrow
Heather Morrow Photography :

I have been photographing people for almost 18 years. I’m extremely curious by nature so whether I’m shooting family portraits, senior portraits, headshots, fashion or branding imagery, the thing I love most is to connect with people, find out what sets them apart and work together to visually tell their story.

Favorite Holiday Meal
Anything that ends with sweets! I make homemade sea salt caramels and no holiday meal is complete without a couple of caramels. I’ve had family members tell me show up with caramels or don’t show up at all.

Favorite Holiday Wellness Routine
Although I’m an extravert, down time is critical for me. As a portrait photographer, fall and the holiday season are my busiest time of year. I sneak in meditation and a little bit of alone time whenever I can to keep myself grounded and present.

All businesses integrate some sort of wellness. We focus on food and bringing people together. Unbakery is located in East Brookside and Billie's in the Midtown Union Hill area. Focused on mostly organic and nutrient dense foods our menu has something to offer the entire family. As a nutritional therapist practitioner I believe health is north to south. We need to be in a parasympathetic state to accept what we put into our bodies. This includes environmental, social and media. Bringing people together and giving them a quality meal in a clean, light, simple environment helps with this.

Favorite Holiday Meal
Apple pie! Is that considered a meal?

Favorite Holiday Wellness Routine
Prioritizing who I love and being present with them. For me, making memories is much more valuable than having things!

Ferrell Richardson
The Cottage Rose Florals :

We are a boutique floral studio specializing in wedding and event florals, design, and custom installations located in the Crossroads Arts District of Kansas City, MO. First and foremost, we are designers, and flowers are our medium. We feel a lot of love for the process of design and the way that each bloom lends us its beauty to create something unique and beautiful for every one of our clients.

Favorite Holiday Meal
My mother in law makes a delicious breakfast casserole with cinnamon rolls every Christmas morning and both my husband and I absolutely love it. This year we are going to try and recreate both dishes, so wish us luck!

Favorite Holiday Wellness Routine
We just finished up a busy wedding season so rest and recuperation are definitely on my mind now. I like to use the winter months to focus on planning for the next year and lots of self care to get me out of a hectic mindset. Using the upcoming holidays to chill with my husband and dogs and cook some yummy food. Unfortunately we won't be seeing family in person, but I'm a little excited to switch it up and start new traditions on a smaller scale.

Meghan Savage
Meghan Savage Photography :

I am a wedding and editorial photographer that specializes in creating natural, timeless images. I love telling stories through photographs and documenting beautiful, authentic moments for my clients. I have a background in editorial and weddings but I also enjoy capturing families and motherhood.

Favorite Holiday Meal
Definitely vegan Italian sausage pasta! I make this every year and it has become a family favorite.

Favorite Holiday Wellness Routine
I try to continue with my same routine year round: exercise, sleep, a healthy diet, supplements and managing stress. I’ve learned how incredibly powerful the mind is and the crucial role it plays in your overall health. I am a big believer in making sure my mental health is a top priority. Slowing down, spending time with my boys and husband, family walks, time outside and creating art are a few other ways that keep me feeling my best.

Anna Petrow
Anna Petrow Photography:

I’m a food and lifestyle photographer, working primarily with local chefs, makers and shop owners to bring their brand to life visually. This year, I’ve had the creative challenge of turning my home into a functional studio– it’s brought a new dimension to my work that I probably wouldn’t have discovered. The best part of my job is the network of inspiring people I get to work with– Kansas City has so many wonderful small business owners who care deeply about their community.

Favorite Holiday Meal
Beouf bourgignon– the classic Julia Child recipe, or Antoni's fun twist on the classic, which has Cognac and parsnips. Pre-pandemic, my favorite holiday meal tradition was grabbing dinner at Bella Napoli with a huge group the night before Christmas Eve. Hopefully next year!

Favorite Holiday Wellness Routine
Instead of letting holiday shopping get stressful, I make sure it’s the most fun part of the season: spacing it out all month on different days by neighborhood, visiting my favorite local shop owners and grabbing coffee or a snack from beloved spots. It’s a practice in love and gratitude– instead of a stressful checklist.

Pam Curry
KC Wildflower :

A local floral and event designer--flowers are a happy business! I love all aspects of helping a client celebrate a friend, brighten their homes or taking on their wedding day.

Favorite Holiday Memory
Spending every Christmas Eve with our extended family.

Favorite Holiday Wellness Routine
Ask my kids and they will tell you: my mom thinks all good health starts with fueling our bodies, exercise, water and sleep. My spiritual life and leaning into my faith help me lead a positive and joyful life.

Jami Block
JRAB Flower Journal :

A floral styling studio specializing in passion infused one-of-a-kind botanical experiences for events, brands, businesses and personal.

Favorite Holiday Movie
Anything from the Mary-Kate and Ash holiday catalog. Like “To Grandmother's House We Go.”

Favorite Holiday Wellness Routine
Creating with beautiful, live flowers, and working on expanding my life “toolbox” through therapy!

Alyssa Broadus
Little Fixations :

It started as a blog to showcase all the growing small businesses and coffee shops that I loved going to! These were the silliest iPhone snaps that I attempted to edit and make look as glamorous as possible. Then, slowly but surely I had a few businesses reach out to me about taking product photos, so I took a leap of faith and bought a professional camera about five years ago and never looked back!

Favorite Holiday Meal
There is something about my Mom’s green bean casserole that has stayed with me over the years, and I’m really looking forward to putting my own spin on it this year! She was a single Mama of four, but always went above and beyond trying to make sure we didn’t miss out on holiday favorites.

Favorite Holiday Wellness Routine
Staying well really starts with keeping my noggin in a protective space. This is the time I truly allow myself to unplug from work, be present with my partner and pup, and indulge when needed. (I also start my morning with a big mason jug of water with a little bit of lemon; it’s been a practice I’ve tried hard to keep these last six months & instantly makes me feel balanced and ready to start the day).
